[ HARO ] Must-See City in Spain’s La Rioja Wine Region

Hola! Welcome to my channel, venga venga! I’m in Haro today. Haro is a Spanish municipality, located northwest of the autonomous community of La Rioja. Its economic activity is mainly focused on viticulture and the production of quality wines.

Haro is famous for its unique wine festival called ‘Batalla del Vino’ which takes place in June. It consists of wetting other participants with red wine until they are completely purple.

In the 1850s and 1860s, vineyards were devastated by a vine disease called ‘phylloxera’ which spread throughout France. Because of this, the French emigrated to Spain and established wineries in the La Rioja region. Peace Square (Plaza de la Paz)

A small city in La Rioja, with about 11,000 inhabitants, which attracts our attention for its wineries and wines, but which has an impressive architectural heritage. The Town Hall: it is a neoclassical building from the 18th century, located in the Plaza de la Paz.

El Torreon Museum At one end of the square, we find the Torreón Museum, whose building is the only remaining part of the walls that had defended the City of Haro since the 12th century. Here are the old photos so you can walk through the history of this city at a glance.

The La Rioja wine region is known for producing some of the best wines in Spain. In 1988, La Rioja became the first wine region in Spain to receive the DOC (Denominación de Origen Qualificada), the highest wine qualification in Spain.

As you walk through the alleys of the city, you can see various murals related to wine. We will enter the oldest church in Haro, built in the 14th century. (Santa Tomás the Apostle Parish Church) This church was declared a National Monument in 1931.

The magnificent baroque organ makes me stay here for a long time contemplating it.

Haro in La Rioja is the region’s wine capital and is famous for its Wine Festival, the wine fight.
The town of Haro has been built around winegrowing since French grape growers came to the area looking for a way to escape the pests in their vineyards.
In the town itself, Haro has some beautiful religious and civil architecture. The church of Santo Tomás, also known as the Watchtower, stands at the foot of a hill and has an impressive archway.
