Welcome into this edition  of Great City Attractions Today we visit an amazing Spanish city These are the great city attractions of Madrid. Royal Palace of Madrid The official residence of  the Spanish Royal Family,   this immense palace contains well over 3000 rooms. Renovations to the current took  place during the early 1800’s  

With the extensive gardens a major  drawcard and feature of the site. Highlights of the interior include it’s  amazing Royal Armory with pieces dating to   the 13th century, and the Crown Room which  contains the jewels of Charles the 3rd. Crystal Palace

Located in a popular park, the glass palace hosted  events during the colonial exhibition of 1887. The structure, made almost  entirely of glass and iron,   remains a popular attraction  within the park grounds. The greater park area is now a UNESCO  world heritage site with elaborate gardens,  

Statues and a striking monument  to King Alfonso the 12th present Cibeles Palace Formerly the palace of communications. The building now houses the Madrid city  council, while also acting as the city hall. The second Spanish republic was proclaimed  on site in 1931 ,while the building remained  

Intact despite the heavy fighting of the  Spanish civil war and siege of Madrid. Temple of Debod When a little bit of Egypt came to Madrid. Sight-seers might be a little perplexed by the  site, it certainly makes for an interesting visit.

Dismantled and erected as a sign of goodwill from  Egyptian authorities the temple was fist conceived   in the 2nd century BC – it was then extended by  the Ptolemies and decorated by Roman emperors. The temple, under threat of destruction,  was donated to Spain in 1968. Plaza Mayor One of Madrid’s most major public spaces.

Plaza Mayor once was the home to the  principal market of Madrid and still   holds a number of markets on weekends to this day. A gleaming statue of Phillip the 3rd,  King of Spain is found within the square. A great central point of interest  and place to visit in Madrid.

The collections here boast over  8000 drawings and some 4000 prints. A number of additional prominent  art museums are within easy walking   distance Teatro Real The Royal Theatre, the principal  opera house of Spain, was opened   by Queen Isabella the 2nd of Spain in 1850.

Many of the best opera singers and  composers in the world have performed here. Tours of the grand theatre are conducted   daily with the main auditorium  able to hold over 1900 people. Puerta de Alcala A Neo-classical gate and arch. This granite and limestone monument was  commissioned in the late 18th century,  

With the arch of the gate  standing around 20 meters high. The arch was used as a venue for  concerts during the 2010 MTV award   ceremony with Katy Perry performing to  some 100’000 fans from beside the arch. Almudena cathedral A striking Catholic Cathedral,  

The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Royal  was completed in the early 1900’s. While the Bell Towers strike out  towards the forementioned Royal Palace,   the interior of the cathedral is known  for its contemporary style and features. Numerous royal burials have taken place  at the Cathedral over the past 150 years. San Miguel Market

Known for its iron facade and central  location the San Miguel Market proves   very popular with tourists to the city of Madrid. The market showcases gourmet foods and baked  goods. A great place to visit for foodies. Puerta Del Sol

The Gate of the Sun in english, this square marks  the meeting point of a number of major roads   within Madrid – thus it became an important  meeting point for the workings of the city. The historic Old Post office, which is  now used by regional government interests,

Visiting Madrid? One of the great capitals of the world! Madrid has plenty to offer those that visit. From famous museums to the cities plethora of tourist attractions and places to see, you’ll never be too far away from being amazed at what you find in this city of wonder.

Among the most visited of Madrid tourist attractions is the Royal Palace of Madrid, it’s a truly vast space which showcases the power of the country and those that have ruled it through the centuries. The extensive gardens, Royal armory and Crown Room are major sights to be seen here

The Crystal Palace, Puerta Del Sol and Plaza Mayor are just some of the other major tourist attractions and places to see within the city of Madrid. Their positions, at the heart of this sprawling metropolis, make great meeting points or places for photos.

The celebrated Prado Museum and Cibeles Palace should also be included on a list of things to see while in Madrid. The Prado has some of the most famous works in the world with the works of Goya particularly treasured among the exhibits.

Off the other major tourist attractions within the city, the Teatro Real and Almudena Cathedral stand out. Both have amazing histories attached to them and provide further glimpses into the vibrant past of this most majestic city.
