La Sagrada Familia – Ugly Duckling or Beautiful Swan? (Vlog 2)

I ask if La Sagrada Familia is an ugly duckling or a beautiful swan for two reasons. When we were first researching Barcelona and I discovered La Sagrada Familia, I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen. But then I saw photos and videos of the interior and thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say.

So when we decided to do our Wonder of the Seas transatlantic cruise and spend a few days in Barcelona, we booked a tour of La Sagrada Familia with Get Your Guide (link below) at 12:30 pm the day we arrived in Barcelona since we weren’t able to check into our hotel until 3:00. This tour was fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a tour of La Sagrada Familia. The tour was 1.5 hours long, but we were allowed to stay as long as we wanted in the church after the tour was finished. The next day we returned to La Sagrada Familia on a different tour with Spain Day Tours as part of their Barcelona & Montserrat all day tour (link below). This time we were simply visiting the exterior of the church and I’ve added two brief videos at the end of this video where our tour guide was discussing Antoni Gaudi and the building of the church.

You might also note a quick shot of an apartment building towards the end. That apartment complex is due to be destroyed in order to finish the church. The front stairs to the church are supposed to be built where the apartment building is located. The church is due to be completed (after 100 years of construction) in the early 2030s.

  1. I have the perception that the later generations didnt manage to do it as good as Gaudi would do it. I mean, I definitely like it, but when comparing for example the Nativity façade with the rest of the building, that gives me the perception that "we" could do it quite better than that. Its like the rest of the building doesnt have the same amount of detail as the Nativity facade has… On the other hand, as you said, every detail has its own meaning, and that make its so unique. Nice video!

  2. I can't help but see it as an interesting experiment of architecture on its conception by Gaudi. In the realm of Church construction, where traditionalism was the norm especially during his time; I think he legitimately had a point to make artistically speaking. Unfortunately, the resulting construction is an eyesore. The patterns and motives used, result in an eclecticism that doesn't really make a cohesive whole, both on the inside and outside. Possibly the only thing I enjoy about it is the Stained Glass art. The lighting and vivacious colors are nothing but incredible to look at.

  3. I’m sorry but I think this is awful architecture. It’s like he had an acid trip and created a monstrosity. It’s so ugly and please God forgive me for being a House of the Lord but it’s pure and utter ugly seriously it’s an eyesore. It hurts my eyes to look at
