SAN SEBASTIAN DE LA GOMERA

San Sebastian de La Gomera has a rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. It serves as the island’s main gateway for travellers from Tenerife and beyond.

San Sebastián is strategically located on the eastern coast of La Gomera, providing easy access for visitors arriving by ferry. The city’s history is deeply intertwined with the age of exploration, most notably serving as the final departure point for Christopher Columbus before his first voyage to the Americas in 1492.

This historical legacy is preserved in several key landmarks throughout the city, making it a fascinating place for history enthusiasts.

The city’s architecture is a mix of traditional Canarian and colonial stylesThe streets of San Sebastián are lined with historic buildings, including the Casa de Colón, where Columbus is believed to have stayed. This house, now a museum, offers insights into the city’s connection to the explorers and the broader history of the Canary Islands.

Another significant historical site is the Torre del Conde, a well-preserved medieval fortress that symbolizes the island’s past. Located in the heart of a lush park, the tower offers visitors a glimpse into the strategic importance of San Sebastián during the colonial era.

Nearby, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción houses an image of the Virgin Mary that Columbus is said to have prayed to before setting sail, adding a spiritual dimension to the city’s historical narrative.

Beyond its historical sites, San Sebastián de La Gomera is known for its beautiful natural surroundings. The city boasts several beaches, including Playa de San Sebastián, a black sand beach that offers a tranquil escape and opportunities for water sports.

The marina is a bustling hub of activity where visitors can enjoy waterfront dining, embark on boat tours, or simply admire the view of the Atlantic Ocean.
