Valldemossa is a small town situated in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. It was founded by King Sancho I, who ordered a castle to be built here to cure his asthma with the mountain air. This palace was converted into a Carthusian monastery after his death. Today, the interiors of the former palace and monastery are open to visitors. In Valldemossa we can see traditional houses made of light stone decorated with green windows. These buildings are very picturesque and the narrow streets between them are often decorated with flowers by the inhabitants. On almost every house there is a plate with the inscription “Saint Catalina Thomas pray for us”, depicting scenes from the life of the saint born in Valldemossa. Also noteworthy are the terraced gardens, typical of mountain villages to protect crops from floods and downpours.
