The Royal Palace of Madrid is located on Calle de Bailén, in the western part of downtown Madrid. It is the official residence of the Spanish Royal family at the city, although how used only for state ceremonies. The Almudena Cathedral, consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993, is located just opposite the Royal Palace.

It was built in the 18th century by order of Philip V on the site of the Old Alcázar Fortress, a former Moorish castle. The interior of the palace is notable for the use of many types of fine materials in its construction and decoration. The frescoes on the ceiling, above the staircase, is by Corrado Giaquinto and depicts religion protected by Spain.

It is a baroque structure with 135,000 M2 of floor space and 3,418 rooms making it one of Europe’s largest castles. In the twentieth century, restoration work was needed to repair damage suffered during the Spanish Civil War. From its viewpoint you can enjoy fantastic views of the city and the mountains of Madrid.
