University Of Puerto Rico Museum Of History, Anthropology & Art | Things To Do In Puerto Rico
If you’re an art buff looking for things to do in Puerto Rico then you can’t do much better than The Museum Of History, Anthropology & Art, at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico.
The Museum is home to Puerto Rican painter Francisco Oller’s “El Velorio”, perhaps the greatest work of art in Puerto Rican history. It is also a museum going through trying times amid Puerto Rico’s greatest economic crisis. But none of that takes away from the life-changing experience of experiencing what is certainly a world-caliber masterpiece.
The Museum is also the oldest in Puerto Rico. Established in 1914 to exhibit a collection donated by Puerto Rico’s first resident commissioner Federico Degetau, the museum evolved to include works by local and world-renown artists, sculptures, archeological treasures and even a collection of Egyptian mummies.
But not all has been roses and rainbows for this modern museum established in a building, designed by German architect Henry Klumb, that’s a work of art in itself. There have also been thorns.
The dire economic times affecting the University have been a challenge in and of themselves. But, the structural damage suffered during the construction of the Islands urban train has been even more dramatic. Half the building is closed while waiting for legal proceedings. And, of course, those have taken well over a quarter of a century! That’s right, it’s not a typo.
That said, if you’re an art buff this museum should be high up on your list of things to do in San Juan. It’s that good!

Thank you for sharing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I never knew there was a active train Puerto Rico. 😀
What a beautiful painting 🎉
I’ve been intrigued with this painting ever since I saw it in a publication. My maternal Abuela was four years old when it was painted. She grew up in a finca and then after her husband passed away moved to a Viejo San Juan to find work and raise her children. Her parents and siblings remained in the finca. This painting brings a picture to me of how she must of lived during her life in the finca. Thank you!
