The Royal Palace of Madrid is the largest in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world. With over 135,000 square metres and 3,418 rooms, it has witnessed centuries of Spanish history. It is one of the few official seat of a Head of State that is open to the public. Almost 2 million visitors come every year to discover its rooms, works of art and treasures that are unique in the world.

Opposite the palace is the Almudena Cathedral. The cathedral has a short but tortuous history. The first plans for the church were drawn up in 1879 by Francisco de Cubas, who wanted to create a pantheon for the late Queen Maria de la Mercedes. The foundation stone was laid in 1883, but when Pope Leo XIII granted a bull in 1885 for the creation of the Madrid-Alcalá bishopric, the plans for the church were changed to become plans for a cathedral.

The Plaza de España is 36,900 square meters, thus one of the largest squares in the country. Its central location makes it ideal to take photographs or rest on one of its many benches watching people go by before heading to your next attraction. This square also has a number of restaurants, cinemas, theatres, stores and shows nearby. In the square, the monument to Miguel de Cervantes stands out: Inaugurated in 1929, the Cervantes Monument depicts the Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes overlooking two sculptures representing his beloved characters Don Quixote and Sancho Panza from his world famous novel Don Quijote de la Mancha.

During the tour we will also visit the Temple of Debod. This is an Egyptian temple dating back to the 2nd century BC, transported to Madrid’s Cuartel de la Montaña Park. The temple was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government to save it from floods following the construction of the great Aswan Dam.

  1. Hola and Happy New Year! (I know, I'm a little late. 🙂

I just wrote some comments on the video and when I went to insert an emoji, I double-clicked on it and suddenly I was on a different video. My comment was gone! I'd insert an 'unhappy' emoji face here, but I'm afraid I would lose this comment too. 🙂

Anyway, enjoyed seeing this part of Madrid, and I loved seeing ice skating in Madrid! Didn't expect to see that. 🙂 If I ever get to Madrid in the winter, I'll be sure to go ice skating there! I'll have to keep it short now, since it's getting late here. Great video. Feliz Ano 2023!

PS: I would try to get the N with a tilde on top, but I'm sure I would end up losing this comment too. 😉

    Take care.
