Txotx! Catch the cider straight from the barrel as we explore a traditional Basque cider house in Astigarraga, a town up the Urumea river, 15 minutes from San Sebastián, with our friend Julen, from AUPA HI! Tours.
Julen took us to Sidrería Gurutzeta, his favorite cider house, and it’s easy to see why! They’ve been a family business, dedicated to making natural Basque cider since the end of the 19th century. And it’s the perfect place to enjoy this centuries old tradition — with new friends, tons of barrels to taste, and some great traditional Basque food!
Originally, Basque cider was kept in massive barrels and used by local sailors to prevent scurvy as they explored the Atlantic all the way to Newfoundland. Since the 1980s, cider has made a cultural comeback for us non-sailors, with fun “endless” tastings and delicious feasts like the one we enjoyed.
If you hear “txotx!” it’s time to grab your glass and get in line for some of the best cider you’ll ever taste.
