Big Pine Lakes Amazing California Hiking Video – Sierra Nevada Mountains

Have you ever seen a photo so beautiful you told yourself you HAD to go there…and then ACTUALLY went? That was Big Pine Lakes for me.

I’ve been dreaming of the glacier waters of Banff for years and when I saw a photo of Big Pine Lakes on Facebook and realized it’s only 4 hours from LA, I had to go!

We camped and hiked up to the first 3 lakes for an epic day in the high sierras!

Hike Details:

Trailhead Big Pine Creek Campground
13.5 miiles roundtrip to lake 2/3
Elevation Gain 2,000 ft.

  1. Thanks for the fantastic video. I'm planning a trip this year and I was wondering if the bug situation around the lakes is normal or out of control? Thanks for any info.

  2. Most wrecked hike via YouTube and Instagram. Only a few years ago you could be the only person there. Now it’s full of annoying people. In a few years you’ll need a permit.

  3. Awesome hike, Monica. I was there early September…can't wait to go back. Will visit the Palisade glacier next time. Thanks for the video!

  4. Made this hike over 50 Yrs ago, there used to be a Glacier alongside lake #2 and if you touched it the Ice would turn redish Orange we slid down leaving streaks down the glacier, Back then you could not swim in the lake as it was a water supply for LA. Also on the otherside of the river between lake 1 & 2 there was part of a trestle, an old oar cart and a colapsed mine.

  5. Wow. Excellent job on the video. Those low hanging clouds above the lakes made for some great shots. Y'all definitely had me smiling. Good job, loved it.

  6. The reason why the lakes are so blue is because of the sediments and meltwater from the glaciers. It’s called glacier flour. Your trip looked fun! Probably will head up this July once covid19 restrictions ease up.

  7. I was just in Bishop two days ago and hiked elsewhere, now I am going back on Monday and doing this!!!…Another road trip …I was on pine creek trail two days ago…have to do this

  8. I really want to do that hike. How you prepare for altitude sickness is get there and spend night in camp ground. Do the hike the next day. That water is straight off the glacier which is why it’s that color. So gorgeous.

  9. Hi Monica. Me and some friends just came back from Lake Tahoe and passed Big Pine Lakes on the way, off Hwy 395. We're seriously thinking about doing it, now that you've shown us how nice it is. Thanks again! 😉

  10. Hi, awesome vid! Question:

So I'll be hiking up to the 2nd lake with 5 other people. 2 of them are more experienced (though one hasn't hiked in awhile), the other three are intermediate or average. It will be my first time hiking in such long-distances. I've read that it has snowed up to 6 inches 4 days ago, and it looks like it'll be the same tomorrow (which is when we are going). I believe none of us have traversed through snowy conditions such as this.

Would it be possible for a beginner, such as myself, to hike up to the 2nd lake in these conditions? I am aware that the total hike for all the lakes is around 16ish miles. We only plan to go to the 2nd lake and we will be heading back afterwards. We won't be camping.

I've hiked smaller distances before, less than 2.8 miles in not much steeper slopes. The conditions in that hike were much hotter than what I've read. I've also camped out at Joshua Tree for a couple days and climbed some of their larger rocks. I also camped out in another desert (forgot the name) and traversed through it's dark and enclosed cave system. In regards to snowy terrain, alls I did was sled down Mountain High. That's the extent of my experiences.

To be honest, a slight bit nervous? As I've read in some of the reviews in Alltrails.com, even experienced hikes said it was difficult. Still excited though! I've seen videos about it, such as yours, and it looks beautiful and not as steep.

    Thanks!
