Spectacular. Unique. Incomparable … Es Colomer is the name of the most famous viewpoint in Mallorca and it is definitely one of those important places that you should have visited at least once on the island. From the top of an impressive cliff in the northernmost area of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, Es Colomer provides you with one of the most spectacular motifs you can find in Mallorca. A real postcard – panorama that never gets boring to photograph.

The viewpoint Mirador de Es Colomer

Nestled on the slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which here already gently merge with the Mediterranean Sea and reach their northernmost end at Cape Formentor, the Mirador de Es Colomer viewpoint opens up to the visitor as a short stop along the way. Here you can stop, rest and admire the picturesque beauty of nature that opens before our eyes.

Around the viewpoint there is a carefully designed path paved with stones along the sea, built directly on the cliff. It allows to get different perspectives of the surroundings. At the end of the path there is a kind of rounded terrace from which you will have the opportunity to take photos and enjoy the scenery.

This spectacular viewpoint is also called Mirador de Sa Creueta and its privileged location has made it a true place of pilgrimage for those who visit the island and in this place one of the most photographed photo opportunities in the world.

History

The Es Colomer viewpoint takes its name from the small island that lies in front of it. It can be seen when looking towards Cape Formentor. The mirador was designed by Antonio Parietti Coll from Palma. The same civil engineer also designed the impressive road that leads to Formentor and its famous lighthouse, as well as that serpentine road that leads to Sa Calobra with its twelve 180 degree curves. When you reach the viewpoint, the first thing you see is a sculpture in honor of its creator.

The viewpoint is a good 200 meters above the sea and offers an excellent view of the entire area: steep cliffs marked by the typical vegetation of the island, the intense blue of the Mediterranean Sea in all its splendor and in the background the great lighthouse of Cape Formentor rises into the sky.

What you can see from the viewpoint of Es Colomer?

The offshore islet of Es Colomer

From the viewpoint, the offshore islet of Es Colomer may seem like a rock in the middle of the sea. But this “rock” is a good 300 meters long and reaches up to 112 meters high above the sea. It has always been uninhabited, but it is one of those places that attracts attention. In fact, many divers consider it a fixed reference for diving in Mallorca: the island has a cave that breaks it from one side to the other; it extends from the part that faces the mountain to the other side that opens to the sea.

La Atalaya de Albercutx

One of the most interesting viewpoints that can be seen from the Es Colomer viewpoint is the so-called Sa Talaia d’Albercutx (the Albercutx watchtower). The watchtower dates back to the time when these coasts in the north of Mallorca were constantly attacked by pirates and corsairs. It rises at a height of 380 meters and offers an incredible view over the bay of Pollença.

It is impossible to talk about the Mirador de Es Colomer viewpoint without mentioning Cape Formentor. Both locations are connected not only by the austere and beautiful nature that surrounds them, but also by history. In fact, much of the magic of Es Colomer comes from the fascinating appearance of this peninsula, which here juts out far into the sea, allowing us to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Mediterranean.

The lighthouse of Formentor was inaugurated in 1863 and is about 25 minutes by car from the viewpoint (about 14 km) … if there is not too much traffic. It is one of the most important lighthouses in Mallorca and was a real challenge for the builders because of its exceptional location. From here you can see over the wide sea around the Balearic Islands and the city of Ciutadella, on the neighboring island of Menorca.
