The Temple of Debod, also known as “Templo de Debod” in Spanish, is an ancient Egyptian temple originally located near Aswan, Egypt. It was constructed in the early 2nd century BC, with contributions from various rulers, including the Ptolemaic dynasty and Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius. The temple was dedicated to the goddess Isis of Philae and was part of a religious complex near the Nile’s first cataract.

In 1960, due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the resulting threat to archaeological sites, UNESCO initiated a campaign to save historical monuments. In appreciation of Spain’s assistance in saving the Abu Simbel temples, Egypt donated the Temple of Debod to Spain in 1968.

The temple was dismantled and reconstructed in Madrid, Spain, specifically in Parque de la Montaña, near the Royal Palace of Madrid. It was opened to the public in 1972. Notably, the temple’s gateways were reassembled in a different order than their original placement in Egypt.

The Temple of Debod is a rare example of ancient Egyptian architecture located outside of Egypt and is the only one of its kind in Spain. However, concerns have been raised by Egyptologists about its exposure to the elements in Madrid. In response to these concerns, the city council of Madrid decided in February 2020 to accelerate plans to protect and cover the monument.
