The Royal Palace of Madrid, also called the Palacio de Oriente and, during the Second Spanish Republic, the National Palace, is the official residence of the King of Spain, located in Madrid, the Spanish capital. With an area of 135,000 m² and 4318 rooms, it is the largest royal palace in Europe.
It was built on the same site as another palace, called Real Alcázar de Madrid, which was destroyed by a fire that lasted three days in the year 1734. Work began on April 6, 1738, when the first stone was laid. Its architect was Giovanni Battista Sacchetti.
The Royal Palace of Madrid remains officially the residence of the King of Spain, although, at present, the King only uses it for gala occasions, lunches, official receptions, prize giving and audiences, since the Royal Family he chose to live in a more modest palace, the Palacio da Zarzuela. Kings consider that in their residence at Monte de El Pardo they can more easily preserve their privacy than in a palace the size of the Royal Palace of Madrid. Afonso XIII was the last monarch to reside permanently in the palace, and Manuel Azaña was the last head of state to inhabit it. The private rooms used by Afonso XIII were in a state of semi-abandonment for a long time, being in the process of being restored. These are in the so-called San Gil Wing.
The construction of a Museum of Royal Collections is also planned nearby, between Plaza de la Armería and la Almudena. This building, partly underground, will house several collections that remain stored. Currently, the Royal Palace of Madrid is managed by the National Heritage of Spain, under the Ministry of the Presidency.
