Tragic Mystery: The Jonathan Gerrish Family’s Fatal Hike in the Sierra Nevada
In August 2021, Jonathan Gerrish, Ellen Chung, their one-year-old daughter Miju, and their dog Oski embarked on a hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Tragically, their bodies were discovered two days later in the Devil’s Gulch area on the Savage Lundy Trail.
Initially, the cause of death was a mystery as their bodies showed no signs of trauma, weapon use, or other obvious causes. After months of investigation, it was determined that they died from hyperthermia and probable dehydration due to extreme heat and environmental exposure.
The family started their hike early in the morning, but as temperatures soared to 109°F with little shade, they became overwhelmed by the heat. Despite desperate attempts to seek help, including a text message and 911 calls, they succumbed to the conditions.
This tragic event highlights the dangers of hiking in severe weather and the importance of preparation and hydration. The loss of the Gerrish family serves as a poignant reminder of the risks inherent in outdoor adventures.
We remember Jonathan, Ellen, Aurelia Miju, and Oski. May they rest in peace.

The lack of common sense the family and the "authorities" had in this entire story is so infuriating to me. This couple actually thought it was a good idea to take their baby and their dog out for an unshaded 10 MILE walk in the Mariposa area during August, the hottest month of the year! The temperature outside was already quickly approaching the high 70's at 7:45 AM! Just imagine being a fully clothed baby strapped up against someone in a heavily padded "cocoon" during the day while the sun beats down hard on you. It seems to me that this was a couple that loved to "over achieve" everything just for "bragging rights" and their lack of common sense got them and their dog killed. Then it actually took authorities 2 months to figure out it was the heat and lack of water that killed them.
Who tf goes on the long of a hike with their 1year old child and dog?
None of them look like multi mile long hikers. Whole thing sounds weird
Their ignorance got them killed, so sad.
This is one of those cases that I will always wonder about… Even stranger is how dismissive the majority of the population was when it came the said conclusion.
There is way more unexplained here, from GO nothing makes sense….Lol it gets me. Thanks for reminding me of this. This is one of those that definitely needs a deeper dive.
